Sessions by the Bay
Heleo

The Sessions by the Bay project, designed by Heleo in National City, California, and completed in 2025, transforms a former abandoned college campus into San Diego County’s first legal cannabis consumption lounge and a new community gathering space. The architectural intervention is based on the idea of creating a skin that simultaneously conceals and reveals, symbolizing the building’s transition into a place of connection and wellness. The perforated Parklex Prodema wood panel, inspired by the curves of the nearby estuary, generates a dynamic pattern that creates an ever-changing play of light and shadow, giving the building a distinctive identity while improving its energy performance by acting as a solar barrier. The project focuses on reusing the existing building, reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to the urban regeneration of the area, becoming an example of sustainable, social and contemporary architecture.
