102 social housing units in the eco-neighbourhood of Puente de Vallecas, Madrid
Architecture: Marmolbravo
The SFJ6 project, located in the heart of Vallecas district in Madrid, offers an innovative solution for social housing, focusing on both urban and private scales. The 102 units are designed to optimise compact spaces without sacrificing the quality of life for their residents, enabling cross-ventilation, access to open views, and connections with the outdoors through balconies and terraces. The building’s architecture facilitates this outdoor expansion, creating a continuous dialogue between the interior spaces and the urban environment.
At street level, SFJ6 establishes a harmonious relationship between the city and the building, creating ground-floor spaces that foster urban diversity and revitalise the surrounding area. The building, conceived as a folded volume, adapts to the pre-existing constructions and the complex topography, generating multiple points of visual and physical connection with the environment, which brings new energy to the neighbourhood. Furthermore, the variation in height and the setback of the top two floors add dynamism to the urban landscape, while the windows, designed to appear larger, reduce the perceived scale, creating a more welcoming and human atmosphere.
In the common areas, the project aims to encourage social interaction through the integration of greenery and a careful selection of materials. The use of timber, earthy plasters, and traditional ceramics in contrast with vibrant nature creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, transforming these areas into more than mere passageways. The result is an environment where materiality contributes to a rich and immersive sensory experience, promoting a sense of belonging among residents.
The natural timber ceilings by Parklex Prodema used in the entrance halls and exterior walkways reinforce this warm atmosphere. The wood, also used in the horizontal façade of the common areas, plays a key role in the residents’ visual experience, particularly in the ceilings of the galleries, where its presence is highlighted when looking upwards. The Parklex Prodema panels meet high standards of durability and resistance, ensuring both technical and aesthetic quality, aligning with the project’s commitment to sustainable and functional design.
